How to apply a finger dressing

Prepare – Before you get started, wash hands and put on your  disposable, non-latex gloves. Do not touch the dressing or wound before this. We highly recommend that you use nitrile powder-free gloves for your first aid kit.

Apply – Making sure the dressing covers the edges of the wound, unfold the finger dressing pad and lay it directly on top of the wound. Keeping it firmly in place by holding the bandage on each side. Then, pass and wrap the short end of the bandage around the injured part of the finger. This secures the dressing pad.  Making sure again that all of the dressing pad is covered, wrap the longer part of the finger dressing around the injured part as well.  Note: Leave the short end hanging out.

Secure – It’s now time to secure the finger bandage by tying the long and short ends together using a reef knot.

Circulation check – Press the casualty’s nail or skin beyond the wound for 5 seconds until it goes pale. Caution: If the colour doesn’t come back within 2 seconds the bandage is too tight. Loosen it, and re-do your circulation check.

Follow up – Keep checking circulation every 10 minutes until professional medical assistance arrives. If you find you are getting blood seeping through the bandage, reapply pressure with a new dressing, this time a little tighter, and with the knot over the wound to maintain pressure on it.
