In cardiac arrest, every second counts. A fast, trained response can save a life. While online videos are useful, nothing replaces hands-on training with realistic manikins and AEDs.

You’ll also learn the Dr ABC method — Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation — to assess casualties effectively.

We also cover sensitive topics such as how to preserve dignity (e.g., removing clothing, jewellery) and how to manage bystanders and family members.

No medical experience is required — just a willingness to learn and help others.

💡 First Aider Tip: Providing Emotional SupportIn emergencies, your calm and reassuring approach helps the casualty feel safe. Listen carefully, explain your actions, respect their dignity, and ask others nearby to assist if possible.

Would You Know When to Use an AED?

Defibrillators are simple to use—but in an emergency, confusion can be fatal. If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR and use the AED immediately. You don’t need to check for a pulse. The AED will assess and act.

A pub in Leeds installed an AED. Two days later, someone collapsed. But no one used it—because they didn’t realise it could help. Training builds confidence.

CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is an emergency procedure performed when someone’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing. It involves giving chest compressions and rescue breaths to manually keep blood and oxygen circulating through the body until professional medical help can take over. CPR can help save lives by maintaining vital organ function during cardiac arrest.

You should perform CPR immediately if you find someone who is unresponsive (does not wake up or respond to you) and is not breathing normally or not breathing at all. The general public is no longer expected to check for a pulse because this can be difficult and time-consuming. Instead, if the person is unresponsive and not breathing or only gasping, you should start CPR right away. This helps maintain blood flow to the brain and vital organs, significantly increasing their chances of survival until emergency services arrive.
