Paediatric First Aid requirements in Wales
Registered childcare and play settings in Wales should ensure that their paediatric first aid arrangements meet the applicable National Minimum Standards and the needs of their setting.
The Welsh Government's 2026 National Minimum Standards distinguish between Full Paediatric First Aid and Emergency Paediatric First Aid and set specific requirements for registered childcare providers.
Full Paediatric First Aid
The current standards require at least one person on the premises caring for children to hold a current Full Paediatric First Aid 12-hour certificate.
In day-care settings, the standards also specify a minimum ratio of 1 trained adult to 10 children holding a current Full Paediatric First Aid certificate.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid
The standards also require certain other staff included within adult-to-child staffing ratios to undertake Emergency Paediatric First Aid 6-hour training and maintain a current certificate.
Exact requirements depend on the type of registered provision and the individual's role.
Welsh Government guidance places responsibility on the childcare provider to select a competent training provider and ensure the chosen paediatric first aid course meets the National Minimum Standards and the needs of the setting.

What does Paediatric First Aid training cover?
Course content depends on whether Full or Emergency Paediatric First Aid is required and on the applicable qualification specification.

Paediatric first aid is currently offered by The Hive as an onsite training service rather than as part of our scheduled Deeside open-course programme.

We confirm the proposed qualification, delivery requirements, availability and quotation before proceeding.
3. Training at your premises
The trainer attends your setting and delivers the required practical training, subject to suitable facilities and course requirements.

Paediatric First Aid guidance for childcare settings in Wales
The Welsh Government's current National Minimum Standards set the minimum paediatric first aid requirements for registered childcare and play settings in Wales. They include requirements covering Full and Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualifications, certificate renewal and the number of suitably trained staff required.
