Emergency Paediatric First Aid Training
QA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid Training (RQF)
This 1-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is ideal for anyone who looks after babies, infants or young children — including parents, nursery workers, nannies, childminders, and early years staff. It’s also suitable for activity leaders, soft play centre staff, and those working in schools or community childcare settings. If you are working in a commercial environment, this course is only suitable if you have employees who already have a full Paediatric First Aid qualification. The certifications from both these courses are valid for three years.
The course offers practical, hands-on training in how to respond confidently in paediatric emergencies. You'll learn how to treat the most common illnesses, injuries and medical incidents affecting children, from choking and seizures to CPR and allergic reactions.
In a medical emergency involving a child, knowing what to do can be frightening — but with the right skills, you’ll be able to take action quickly and safely. This course gives you the confidence and competence to step in when it matters most.
If a child is unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR immediately. You are not expected to check for a pulse — just look for signs of life. If you are unable or unwilling to give rescue breaths, hands-only CPR is still better than doing nothing.

Who's looking after who?
It’s brilliant that schools are now teaching children CPR and basic life-saving skills — empowering the next generation to act in an emergency. But here’s a thought: while your child might know how to help you, would you know what to do if the tables were turned?
We think it’s only fair that parents, carers and family members are just as prepared. After all, shouldn’t we be able to look after them just as well as they’re learning to look after us?
Having the knowledge to act calmly and confidently while waiting for the ambulance crew can make all the difference. Whether it’s giving CPR, dealing with choking, or recognising the signs of something serious — you could be the first and most important link in the chain of survival. It’s not just reassuring for you, it’s a powerful way to protect the people you love most.
In the UK, a large number of children are affected by choking each year. On average, 34 children are treated in hospital for choking on food every day, according to a study by St John Ambulance. While not all cases result in hospitalisation, the figure highlights how common these incidents are. Tragically, choking is the third most common cause of death in babies, with 2–4 babies choking to death each year in England and Wales. Knowing how to act in those critical moments could save a child’s life — perhaps even your own.
