Emergency Paediatric First Aid requirements in Wales
The Welsh Government's current National Minimum Standards for regulated childcare distinguish between Emergency Paediatric First Aid and Full Paediatric First Aid.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid should be undertaken face-to-face and last for a minimum of 6 hours, excluding breaks. Certificates must be renewed every three years.
Day-care settings
In registered day-care settings in Wales, staff included within adult-to-child staffing ratios who do not hold Full Paediatric First Aid must undertake Emergency Paediatric First Aid training and maintain a current certificate.
New starters should normally complete the six-hour Emergency PFA certificate within three months of starting work, subject to the detailed conditions in the National Minimum Standards.
Childminding
A childminder, and an assistant who may be left in sole charge of children, must hold Full Paediatric First Aid.
Where an assistant is not left in sole charge, the current standards say they should hold Emergency Paediatric First Aid and complete it within three months of starting work.
The appropriate qualification depends on the type of registered provision, the learner's role and the staffing requirements that apply to the setting.
Who is Emergency Paediatric First Aid for?
Training may be appropriate for:
- staff in registered day-care settings who require Emergency PFA under the staffing arrangements;
- childminding assistants who are not left in sole charge of children;
- school and childcare staff requiring emergency paediatric skills;
- holiday clubs and play settings;
- youth and community organisations; and
- other teams caring for or working regularly with children.
Do you need Full PFA instead?
Full Paediatric First Aid is a minimum 12-hour course and includes a wider range of paediatric first-aid situations.

What does Emergency Paediatric First Aid cover?
The Welsh Government's current National Minimum Standards specify a core set of emergency paediatric first-aid outcomes for the six-hour course.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid is currently offered by The Hive as an onsite training service rather than as part of our scheduled Deeside open-course programme.
