Qualsafe Level 3 Award in the Fundamentals of Outdoor First Aid (RQF)
This focused qualification introduces first aid in an outdoor context. It may be suitable where learners need additional outdoor first aid knowledge and practical competence but do not require the more extensive Outdoor First Aid qualification.

This more extensive qualification is designed for people whose roles or activities require a deeper level of practical first aid training for outdoor and potentially more remote environments.
As a result, it may be particularly relevant to outdoor professionals and people who need to satisfy specific first aid requirements associated with leadership or instructor roles.

Why does Outdoor First Aid need a different approach?
In a conventional workplace, professional emergency assistance may often be relatively accessible. By contrast, outdoor incidents can present additional practical challenges.

The casualty may be some distance from a road, building or straightforward ambulance access point.

A first aider may need to manage the casualty for longer while professional assistance is organised or reaches the location.

Weather, temperature, terrain and exposure can affect both the casualty and the people providing assistance.

Getting appropriate help may require clear communication about the casualty, location, access and nature of the incident.
Practical training for real outdoor situations
Outdoor First Aid should be more than simply learning information in a classroom.
Instead, practical training should help learners develop the confidence and competence to assess an incident, make sensible decisions and provide appropriate assistance when somebody becomes injured or unwell.
Where appropriate to the qualification and training environment, scenarios and practical exercises can also help learners think about how first aid principles apply outside the controlled conditions of an ordinary workplace.
Do you need Outdoor First Aid for a Mountain Training qualification?
If you are undertaking an outdoor leadership or instructor qualification, you should always check the specific first aid requirements of your own scheme before booking.
Mountain Training currently requires a current first aid qualification at assessment for its leader and instructor qualifications.
For most outdoor qualification schemes, the minimum requirement is a physically attended course involving at least two full days or 16 hours of instruction together with an element of assessment.
However, some schemes have different requirements. Therefore, a particular course should not be assumed to satisfy every qualification or governing body’s requirements automatically.
