Who is CPR & AED training for?

CPR and AED skills are useful far beyond designated workplace first aiders.

Resuscitation Council UK states that everyone can learn CPR and that anyone can use an automated external defibrillator. Current guidance emphasises early recognition, calling 999, prompt CPR and using an AED as soon as one is available. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Particularly useful for:

  • workplaces that want more employees confident in CPR and AED use;
  • organisations with an AED on site;
  • reception, customer-facing and public-facing teams;
  • schools and education settings;
  • gyms, leisure and hospitality organisations;
  • community, voluntary and faith organisations; and
  • individuals who simply want practical life-saving skills.

Why train if anyone can use an AED?

AEDs are designed so that members of the public can use them, and formal training is not required before somebody may use one. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Training still has an important role: it gives people an opportunity to practise CPR, handle an AED, understand the sequence of actions and become more confident about responding under pressure. Resuscitation Council UK recommends that people who may be called upon to use an AED are trained and keep their skills up to date. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

CPR & AED training is not a substitute for EFAW or FAW where your workplace requires trained first aiders.

This course develops focused resuscitation skills. Employers should still determine their overall workplace first-aid provision through an appropriate first-aid needs assessment.

What will you learn?

The course concentrates on the early actions that matter when somebody is unresponsive and may be in cardiac arrest, with plenty of practical skills practice.

  • Recognising an unresponsive person
  • Calling 999 and getting help quickly
  • Recognising abnormal breathing and suspected cardiac arrest
  • Starting CPR promptly
  • Effective chest compressions
  • Rescue breaths where appropriate
  • Using an automated external defibrillator safely
  • Following AED voice and visual prompts
  • Working with others during a cardiac-arrest response
  • Handover to the emergency services
  • Practical scenarios
  • Building confidence to act

Why consider CPR & AED training for more of your workforce?

An organisation may have only a limited number of formally designated first aiders, while a cardiac arrest could happen anywhere and at any time.

CPR & AED training provides a relatively short and practical way to give a wider group of employees basic resuscitation competence without suggesting that they are replacing the organisation's formally trained workplace first aiders.

It can be particularly useful where an AED is already installed and an employer wants more employees to feel comfortable retrieving it, starting CPR and helping while emergency services are on their way.

Resuscitation Council UK's 2025 guidance places particular emphasis on giving members of the community the confidence, knowledge and skills to act, rather than allowing fear of imperfection to prevent somebody from helping. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}
