Basic Life Support Training for GP Practices & Dental Teams
BLS training for GP practices, primary care teams and dental practices across North Wales, with practical onsite sessions designed around the realities of healthcare settings.
The Hive Collaborative already provides recurring Basic Life Support training for GP practices in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board East area and can support both clinical and non-clinical teams.
Training can be arranged for individual practices, whole teams and primary care organisations requiring repeat annual updates across one or more sites.
Practical BLS for primary care
Training can be planned around the needs of the practice and the roles within the team.

BLS training for primary care teams
Resuscitation training needs to reflect the people who may be expected to respond when a patient, colleague or visitor becomes seriously unwell.
GP practices
Whole-practice BLS updates for GPs, nurses, healthcare professionals, reception teams and other practice staff.
Dental practices
Practical resuscitation training for dentists, dental nurses and other members of the dental team.
Primary care networks
Training arrangements can be discussed for groups of practices or organisations operating across several locations.
Clinical staff
Practical CPR, AED and resuscitation skills appropriate to healthcare professionals' expected roles.
Non-clinical staff
Reception, administrative and other staff can also require appropriate resuscitation awareness and practical competence.
Multi-site practices
Repeat training can be planned across several surgeries or locations where a group wants greater consistency.
Training designed around the reality of primary care
GP practices and dental teams often need to update several members of staff while continuing to provide patient services.
For that reason, onsite delivery can be particularly useful. Practices can arrange a suitable session around protected learning time, team training or another period when staff can take part together.
Where several practices are involved, we can also discuss a planned programme rather than treating every annual update as an unrelated booking.
The aim is straightforward: effective practical training that fits into the way the practice actually operates.
Resuscitation training in primary care
Resuscitation Council UK recommends regular resuscitation training for everyone working in primary care, including non-clinical staff, at a level appropriate to their expected role.
Its current quality standards state that clinical staff should have at least annual updates. They should be able to recognise cardiorespiratory arrest, summon help, begin CPR and, where appropriate, attempt defibrillation using an AED with minimum delay.
The standards also recognise the importance of adult and paediatric resuscitation training within primary care.

What can the BLS session cover?
The precise content and qualification route should reflect the requirements of the group. Practical BLS training may include:
Adult resuscitation
Recognition of cardiorespiratory arrest, summoning assistance and high-quality adult CPR.
Paediatric resuscitation
Practical consideration of the differences between adult and paediatric resuscitation where relevant to the team's role.
AED use
Practical use of an automated external defibrillator and its place within the resuscitation sequence.
Airway management
Appropriate airway and ventilation techniques can be included according to the course requirements and expected role of learners.
Team response
Practical scenarios can help staff consider communication, roles and teamwork during a resuscitation emergency.
Emergency equipment
Where appropriate, training can help staff consider how the practice's emergency equipment fits into their response arrangements.
Onsite BLS training at your practice
Bringing the training to the practice can make annual updates much easier to organise.
Whole-team training
Clinical and non-clinical staff can train within the same planned session where appropriate to the course structure.
Protected learning time
Training can be arranged around existing team development or protected learning arrangements, subject to availability.
No unnecessary travel
Staff remain at their own practice rather than travelling individually to an external training venue.
Annual planning
Repeat clients can discuss future annual updates as part of an ongoing training relationship.
Experience supporting GP practices in North Wales
The Hive Collaborative already provides recurring Basic Life Support training to multiple GP practices in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board East area.
That experience means we understand some of the practical issues practices face when arranging annual team training, including releasing staff, coordinating clinical and non-clinical teams and fitting training around patient services.
We would be pleased to discuss BLS provision with other practices and primary care organisations across North Wales and surrounding areas.
BLS training for dental practices
Resuscitation Council UK states that dental practitioners and other dental healthcare professionals should update their resuscitation knowledge and skills at least annually.
Its dental quality standards include CPR, basic airway management and AED use, together with regular practical and simulation-based training.
Dental practices in Wales should also be aware that NHS-contracted General Dental Practices currently have access to a HEIW-commissioned blended Basic Life Support and medical-emergency training programme.
Therefore, an NHS-contracted dental practice should check the HEIW route available to it before purchasing separate private training.
The Hive may still be relevant for private or mixed practices, additional training requirements, organisations outside that commissioned route, or teams seeking a different onsite training arrangement.

BLS training for practice groups & multiple sites

For larger organisational requirements, our national and multi-site training page explains more about our wider delivery model.
First Aid guidance for employers
We also publish practical guidance through our First Aid Advice hub.
This covers subjects including First Aid needs assessments, workplace First Aider provision, training choices and maintaining competence.
Arrange BLS training for your practice
Tell us where your practice is based, approximately how many people require training and whether you are looking for an annual team update or a wider training programme.
